It’s a program that controls your hardware features to
manage it as much as the hardware of your phone could.

My experience of custom kernels goes into two
different ways: - Abilities of custom kernel & disappointing points of
custom kernel.
Abilities of custom kernel:
1-With custom kernel you can control your CPU
frequency to make your phone faster or slower to save battery.
2. You can control the sound of your speakers to make
it louder than the original.
3. Charge your phone faster by changing the charger
current of an AC charger and USB charger to charge your phone faster in both AC
and USB chargers.
The abilities that I mention are the only things that
I do with custom kernels
Disappointing points of custom kernels.
1. Your phone will be overheated in some situation
like over clocking the CPU frequency or over clocking the charge current of
your AC and USB chargers.
2. Your phone may brick while installing the custom
kernel, but still it’s a soft brick, so it can be fixed.
3. Your phone may get slower in some cases, because of
the version of the kernel or the version of your phone.
At the end it depends on your use and the powerful of
your phone; if you have a powerful phone and you want more features like fast
charging, you probably want to try a custom kernel, but if you have a low
performance phone especially old android device, you probably want to try, but
you may find some cons with it; overall it’s your choice.
